How To Prepare For Laser Hair Removal

by Alyssa Watson

If you're tired of spending time waxing, shaving and plucking unwanted hair away, laser hair removal may be for you. The laser hair removal process is done by professionals and involves shining concentrated light directly into hair follicles. When the hair follicles' pigment absorbs the light, the hair is destroyed.

After a few hair removal sessions, the hair typically doesn't grow back. In addition to never having to shave, wax or pluck again, you'll be able to target stubborn, hard-to-remov hair with the laser's precision.

Although laser hair removal is generally fast, easy and painless, there are a few things you'll need to do before the treatment to ensure the best results. In the days and weeks leading up to your appointment, here's how to prepare:

1. Six weeks before undergoing the laser hair removal treatment, limit the amount of times you wax or pluck the areas, such as your legs or underarms, that you'll be treating. You'll also want to avoid electrolysis as well. At about two weeks before the treatment, stop waxing,  plucking and doing electrolysis completely. All of these techniques remove hair by their roots, which the laser will need to target.

You can still shave these areas, however, since razors just remove surface-level hair and leave the roots intact. You may also use hair clippers if you desire.

2. Another thing you will need to avoid at least six weeks prior to the laser treatment is excess sunlight, tanning booths and self-tanning lotions. If you need to spend a lot of time outdoors, be sure to wear a sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or more.

3. Since laser hair removal is a medical treatment, consult with your doctor before undergoing the process if you have any known health problems. You doctor may want you to take antiviral or antibacterial medication prior to the treatment to be on the safe side.

4. Shave the area you'll be treating the day before the process to remove all surface-level hair. You'll want to leave the follicles in place, but having longer hair may make the laser treatment more painful. Move the razor in the same direction as hair growth to avoid any irritation or rashes before the treatment.

5. Immediately before the hair removal process, thoroughly wash the area with soap and water to remove any dirt, body oil or lotion from the skin, which can hinder the laser treatment. For more information, contact professionals like Power MD.
