What Should Patients Do When Getting Botox Injection Treatment?

by Alyssa Watson

Botox is a cosmetic treatment that allows people to achieve smoother, more youthful skin without needing to undergo surgery. Botox is administered in the form of injections with fine needles. A dermatologist can administer Botox injections in their office. The procedure is typically so quick that you can undergo it during your lunch break. However, it's still wise to adequately prepare ahead of time. These are some of the things patients should do when getting Botox injection treatment:

1. Prepare to go bare-faced at the dermatologist's office

In order to inject Botox into your face, your dermatologist will first need to clean the skin at the injection site. This will ensure that your skin is free from bacteria so you can avoid an infection. You can speed this process up by showing up at your dermatologist's office makeup-free. If you do choose to wear makeup to your appointment, you should be prepared to wash it off before your procedure.

2. Request any analgesics that you think you'll require

Most people find the discomfort of Botox injections highly bearable. However, some people are understandably concerned about the idea of needles in their faces. Fortunately, dermatologists have access to a number of analgesics that can make your Botox procedure more comfortable. Topical anesthetics can numb the uppermost layer of your skin, so the sensation of your Botox injections will be less noticeable. Some dermatologists can also offer a cold spray that will have an analgesic effect. If your dermatologist does not offer these pain-relief treatments, you can request them yourself.

3. Defer to your dermatologist's expert opinion

You will likely have some opinions about the ideal outcome of your Botox treatment. Your dermatologist will use your input to determine how much Botox to give you. However, ultimately, you should defer to your dermatologist's expert opinion. They have the expertise and knowledge necessary to give you the outcome you desire.

4. Be prepared for slight cosmetic side effects

Botox is well-tolerated by most people. However, you may notice a few minor side effects in the days immediately following your Botox injections. For example, you may experience some swelling or bruising at the places where you had your Botox injections. These effects should fade as your body heals and integrates the Botox injections into your system. In the meantime, you can treat any discomfort you experience using ibuprofen, ice packs, and warm compresses. You can also feel free to wear makeup to camouflage any bruising you experience as soon as you feel well enough to do so.
